At the beginning of Bede's article on early Chinese thumb rings, he mentions that Stephen came across an archaeological report about neolithic Chinese rings made of stone: http://www.atarn.org/chinese/thumbrings ... _rings.htm

Is there a way for me to find the report or obtain images of those stone rings?

In the years that have passed and after some discussions with Chinese archaeologists, I have come to suspect that the Hong Shan rings in the report were misidentified. For the time being, I believe that the Fu Hao ring (late Shang) may be the oldest undisputed archer's ring excavated in China. I have also seen a few fake 'neolithic' rings based on the Fu Hao design.

When I wrote the article, Stephen told me about the Hongshan rings and we thought that they might be thumb rings. I included the reference to them in hopes that more information would come to light, but Stephen's later conclusions seem valid.
