Trying to figure materials for Turkish Hornbow???

Hi folks.

I'm planning on a couple of Ottoman bows soon but I've never worked with sinew. I'm having trouble figuring how much sinew I need for one bow......on average how many unprocessed leg sinews would I need? I know it matters what length of bow I'm building, but I haven't figured that out yet, and since I need to order this stuff in likely from Highland horn, what would be a good estimate?
I assume 3 courses to each limb right? I see in Adam's book that he measures by weight of sinew. (80-100grams).

Since cost is an issue here, I'd like to figure how many 8-10in leg sinews I'm going to need for this.
BTW, would the elk leg sinew from HH be a good source???
Thanks

hey EA

I recently called around to local butchers until i found one that will supply me fresh cow leg tendon. Organic, free range cattle. Every couple weeks they call and i go pick up a package, long tendons, i clean em up, hang em to dry, and make glue with the slime and scraps. Lots of fun. And no postage. I can't believe i ever bought sinew online!

Maybe just one phone call, brother.

You need about 11-16 deer-size sinews to have about 100 grams of processed sinew ready for backing.

If my memory is correct, I got 7,6 grams processed fibres out of one HH-sinew. - and you need about 100 for one bow.

It depends a little on what quality/length you deside is good enough for the bow, however. I'd buy a bunch, to have some in case the bow needs some wrapping.

Moose is easier to process than deer, and they are of course longer. Get some if you can :) - if not, I think HH is a good source.

Thanks for the input...Yes I can get moose tendon in the fall, but that's a ways down the road...I can likely get cow tendon locally, but I hear it is very greasy and not the best choice.

Hmm, I think perhaps my memory is incorrect... I'll shred one sinew and let you know how much it weighs tonight.

Guess my memory served me better than I thought. I got 9 grams out of one tonight.

Thank you for that information...it'll help in my figuring.
