I got my hands on a cheap alabaster egg. I think it's the calcite variety because I can't make any scratches with my finger nail. Has anyone tried to make an alabaster (calcite) thumb ring?

I think you'll be alright as long as the walls of the thumb hole are not too thin. It should be quite a chunky ring.

I tried to make a thumb ring from jasper using a Dremel tool and some drilling diamond heads. I worked a lot, but it's very hard to shape it, the stone material that I'had chosen being very hard to work. I shall look for that ring to make some pictures.

alabaster has similar property as gypsum. Very soft and fragile. I thing that ourancestors known very well why don?t use that minerals but jade, onyx, nefrite etc.
Especialy for bows over 80 pounds is durability of material very important. And if you have an ambitions time to time to hit a target you need very preciously made shape of TR and not to adapt shape to easy carved materials.
