is this fish bladder?

i just bought 1/4 pound of the stuff for 17 dollars in Chinatown. I figure 17 bucks is no risk...he wanted me to buy a pound minimum but i said that wasn't going to happen, but if i liked what i got i would come back.

here's hoping.
Kviljo
Yep!
radius
yay! i've been reluctant to buy the stuff because i was afraid it was not the proper material. I've got these pieces sitting in warm water right now, to soften them up. When they soften, i'll cut them up with scissors and then make the glue!

awesome.

the chinese don't call these "air bladders" they say "fish belly" and so i was confused. Man there is a lot where this came from The Chinatown in Vancouver is quite large.
jiao
yes it is bladders, 17$*4*6.5=442rmb, add the cost of post form china, it near same cost in china,if the seller not buy thousands bladders, he has no profit and the bladders of some fish turn a few in years, the price also riseing, if you sure it is good for glue, try buy more and save for the future, the big bladder good the the small but more expensive

the 1/2 or 1/4 of one bladder enough to do the test of make glue,

well that worked out. Simmered at about 70 degrees C last night for approximately 10 or 11 hours. Strained it, put it in a stainless steel container in the fridge over night and here is this morning's result.

It is a solid but jiggly gelatinous mass now, clear of deleterious material. This gonna be good. There was a lot of material left in the pot after straining out the glue, so i added a bunch of sinew scraps, topped it up again, and today i'm making glue which is a combination of fish and sinew.

i like making glue....these bladders didn't even stink!

Open up a clear plastic bag without labels, chop up glue with a fork and spread out pieces. I like well ventilated drying.

This will dry into the smallest pieces and will release from the plastic when dry.
radius
sounds good i'll try it
jiao
radius, if i am not wrong you buy a sort of croaker bladders, it is not need add sinew or mix other glue, they can gel very strong than sinew or hide glue, me and other two chinese find the bladder glue dry on a metalline or chinaware plate, very hard use knife remove it,

There was a lot of material left in the pot after straining out the glue

did you remove lot's un-dissolve bladder?ok, some glue very easy dissolve form bladder, some glue very difficulty dissolvem, maybe it is organizational/frame albumen, pulverize it you can find the glue gel very strong, you can see how the korean bowyer make the glue and some glue is not so transparency it like the milk, form i do test has no greet differ the very transparency glue of sinew/hide/bladder,if the glue can gel strong, they can shrink your skin very strong
radius
Jiao,
thanks for your input. I've seen your work and i will take you at your word. You think these are the croaker bladders? That's great. My 17 dollars got me alot of glue.

i took everything that was left, threw a bunch of sinew scraps in, and boiled that all day today. i just poured it out.

i need a proper meat grinder, so that i can use all of the material.

as for mixing the glue: i just wanted to try it, experiment, see if the result looked or acted different.

again, thanks for your advice

the one on the left is the mixed bladder/sinew glue. the one on the right is the pure bladder glue.

pulverize? do you mean actually pound the dried bladders into dust? that sounds good

Hi,
I am soaking my 1/4 lb yellow fish maw now. How many days did you soak before you cut them into pieces? Is there any suggested amount of water when these bladders started to boil between 60 and 70 c degree.
Since I will let that gelatinous mass harden after boiling and straining, I wondered if there is any proportion of water vs bladder to start with.
jiao
pulverize dry bladder or damp bladder,

the dry bladder too hard and pliable. if the bladder is big size long /wide/thicknessm, pound the bladder like sinew string, or wring the bladder, you can got bladder fibers very fast ,i am not know what tool help pulverize dry bladder to powder, pound it is not good method, but it help reduce time of soaking bladder, low temperature steam also works well

i pound the dry bladder for half day no effect of got powder, so i add a few water pound them half day, one day for pound it so i lose the endurance steam the bladder fibers for 3 minute, then pound it for 2 hours, very easy, then steam it , i find 8 minute enough for boil the glue, the bladder very fast dissolve in water, you can see the video on yourtube how the korean bowyer make and use glue, how many time the bladder dissolve what tool for make glue

boil the glue for more than XX hours is not a good idea, if you see the water more yellow , the some part of bladder has become glue, the glue will weak by long time in water or boil or damp, you must use a few time make and use the glue, when you see some glue got , put them in icebox and add new water boil the glue again , the glue in icebow you can separate lots ice, maybe the" clear gule" has best ability of infiltration, but it has pool ability of gel, the muddiness glue(not gel very translucent) has best ability of gel, it's color like the milk or butter, shrink your skin very strong you can find you old more, the glue can let the cloth stand and shoot well

the new dry bladder is not stability, for the food new dry bladder is too strong glutinosity damage stomach, when save more years the bladder will become red color, the traditional chinese carpenter also use the red color bladder make the glue,i see a video a carpenter pound the bladder in a small stone cup, use the new dry bladder maybe your bow will break in 10 years because the glue loss stronger,

i find the glue can use two fingers draw the glue line(or thread) , the juyuanhao bowyer use hide glue ,never i can use any bladder glue copy the ability of draw the glue thread, i remove the leather form a fiberglass bow of juyuanhao , i find so many long glue thread, the chinese carpenter also not use bladder glue use hide glue in this 100 years

in any case my glue can not copy any capability of the video bowyers share on internet, before we know some knowledge we are waste the time and money only, but must continue do it , i will buy 1-5$ bladder again, maybe after 3 years i can buy one bladder cost 300$ 8) ,

i use 2.5 hours write, i hope you can know my chinese style english

i hear the steam in pressure cooker is 60-70 c degree, some induction cooker has 70 c degree, some oven also , i use the hot-water bag hot the stell box and use bedquilt keep warm, more green and low carbon :)

i have been making glue again. I`m trying to get it right. I think the best batch of sinew glue i ever made was the first one, and i left it in the fridge too long.

the fish glue dried down to hard clear amber coloured nuggets, all sucked in on themselves in the middle. the bladders weren`t red, but next time i buy these i`ll look for ones that are red.

I thought the reason my glue wasn`t coming out well is that i was using too low a temperature. so this batch of glue was made at a constant 85 degrees, just under boiling. after cooking the hard material (sinew) overnight, i strained the white liquid, refilled the pot with water, and cooked it again at a higher heat. After a few hours at 85 degrees, i strained the liquid (white again but clearer), and churned the material in a blender until it was just sludge. I boiled that sludge (85 degrees, not actually boiling) for about another 4 hours and it came out the stickiest, darkest glue of the bunch.

the fish glue:

i used some the other day. Mixed at 1 cup water to .25 cup dry measured glue, i found it worked nicely as a sizing coat, seeming to run very thin. But a few hours after shutting off the glue pot, the glue still hadn`t set. I tried a mix of 50% hide glue and 50% fish glue in a 25% glue:water mix, and used that to glue an osage belly lam onto a core. that seems good. The glue gelled in a reasonable time but not hard. Last night i did a bunch of sinewing with a similar solution. We`ll see how it goes.

Jiao, thanks for taking the time to write.

A bit pricey for most...

got a food dehydrator today for the primary purpose of speeding up the preservation of the glue i make. works beautifully. i endorse it wholeheartedly. I just put it in the bottom of the machine, and a couple hours later extract a leaf of glue which is perfectly dry for storage, and perfectly thin for quick absorption of water when the time comes to use the stuff.

it's the way to go.

Hi Gentlemen,

If got a very important question to ask, I would be glad if someone can helb me with this.
I think I have read about mixing hide glue with fish glue in the past.
I?am pretty shure the bowyers in the past did this as well.
So now I?am asking my self about the mixing ratio.
With out advise I would do it 1/3 fish(sturgeon) glue and 2/3 hide(rabbit) glue.
Any ideas about it?

Sincerly yours!

Ruben

I beleive adams book says rabbit glue is no good due to its high fat content, try commercial hide glue instead.....
Ruben
Thanks, it?s a comercial clue, it is very strong, just the problem is it gets a gel very very fast, takes seconds seconds.

for wood to wood, or horn to wood, i like hide glue by itself, fast gelling is best. If it is too fast, add a bit of water to dilute the solution.
Uli
Hi
I like to use thick rabbit glue for horn/wood (fast gelling)
fish glue for sinewing (slow gelling)
if gelling too fast add some water
Ruben
Thanks Uli,

I?am not that experienced in useing hide clue, just glued few times, but I dont like the gelin thing, adding more water slows it down for shure, but I want to try to add fish glue.
