Hide glue

Hello Gentlemen,

I have to ask an other question about glue, hope someone can ansear to it.
Is hideglue getting better or worst in quality when often used?
I mean when using it and letting it dry again for several times, without overheating of course.
It seems like the glue is not shrinking that much anymore after several times of use, that would indicate that it got worst maybe, but on the other hand it seems to be not that brittle.

Apparently the repeated heating and reheating of glue can only degrade the glue. I'm fairly sure that every hour the glue spends above 80 celsius it is seriously degraded.....

Well, i cant agreed with that, im my experiance the glue is getting better and better.
On the other hand im nut sure i heat it to so mutch as 80 degredes every time, 40-50 is enough.
Ruben
Thanks for your opinion!

In my opinion every new heating degrades the adhesive capability of the hide glue. That?s why I usually never repeat or re-heat the glue for horn-core and sinew glue wise. If I want to glue wood to wood, sometimes double heating would happen.
Ruben
You now this from experience or are you just cautious?
By the way you making wonderful bows I saw :P

My experience with self-made fish and sinew glue is same as Mongol Khan's (Sainuu!): heat to max 60?C and it gets better each time
(probably because water evaporates, small air bubbles can escape and homogenization effect)

though in theory proteins get degraded by repeated freeze-thaw cycles

Thats interesting... hmmm!?
I thought somthing changed, but I didn?t now if its good or bad.
When I take the fresh glue- granulate its not homogenous in its color.

I always prepare it in a glass tee cup with a bamboo stick in it, so after cooling down the glue is a gel and the stick sticks in it.
And I got the feeling in fresh glue it sticks not as tight as in old one. Last time it was impossible to get it out and it looked different.

I can confirm that.
Just that i cook my glue me self, and if i want it stronger i just soak 2-3 stripes of the dried glue in a glass of cold water for 1 day, so the stripes get big yellow (they was brown when dried) and wet right thrue.
Then i pick them upp from the glass of water and add them to the main glue cup that i keep in the fridge.
And when i need glue i just warm the cup from the fridge to 40-50 celsius.
And if the glue jell when i use it, witch it usually does, i just warm the whole thing with a hairdrier.
Ofquorse i would rather warm it over the fire, but sadly there is not everywhere you are allowed to make a fire inside youre house.

open fire in a house .. not even allowed in MN :D .. maybe go for a geer.

Hello, I am a new participant in the forum. I want to share my experience with glue. My belief is that after each reactivation, it really becomes seemingly more powerful ... however, it is just hard and brittle, losing its elasticity.
Ruben
Thanks Stilian,

you mean it becomes more brittle after few times in use???

Regards!

Yes, Ruben, exactly. Could be used for joints but not for the horn or sinew.
