Hi everybody! The autumn came, so it's time to pick up all the materials for my turkish bow project. I have a tatar maple wood. And fortunately I met a guy in my city who lives in India & he have a friend there who can sell me some horns. So I have a question for you guys. Can I use domestic buffalo horns for my bow? because my friend says it gonna be a problem with customs if he brought me a wild buffalo horns.
And of course what size they must be( width, lenght & other characteristics)?

Hi Jack! Yes I thought about ibex horns, but it might be more work with ibex, to achieve a desired shape, isn't it?
Dusan

Some people find them in the mountains and maybe you could buy one of these sets. Anyway a horn should also dry out before use. A year old found horn should be a good thing if not too weathered.

In my opinion there would be no competition between a water buffalo horn and an Ibex for aesthetics. It would be more authentic and one of few.

Thank you Jack for your opinion & advices as an expert. I talked with Adam about book. So I decided to buy it in this month. And You know I looked for fish glue but found it sells only in Russia & it's too expensive for me, but if I try to cook it by myself using bladders from fresh water fish like (carp, catfish, zander or if fortuned sturgeon) is it good idea? (aimed to 55-60 pound bow) Is the fish glue an important ingredient in a mix with sinew or raw hide?
jack farrell
This is a very contentious topic here but I use imported German pearl glue pellets and sometimes add Korean fish glue so I can say I did but I find it to be of no noticeable advantage. I believe that the manufacturer of pearl glue rates it as only just barely noticeably less strong than fish glue.

I cannot believe that cultures of antiquity would insist on fish glue when so many other types existed. Fishermen acquire fish parts.

Of course one can make his own collagen glue if one knows how.*

* Another IF. There are few who can demonstrate (scientifically) the effectiveness of glues.
Dusan
:) simply answer-yes.Cook your own glue from sweet water fish + sinew ,this work good for you.

Thanx Dusan & Jack!! Ok, D.I.Y 8) maybe first I shall try (my own glue) on a simply sinewed a bit recurved acacia selfbow. And if everything will be nice try it on a horn turkish bow
