New Turkish war bow,108 cm ntn horn 5mm, wood5mm, kasan 15cm length I just did first layer of sinew, ready for second layer. Also, I eventually figured out why my other bows were keep breaking on the tepeliks when I try to open them! they were too dry!! after long time drying process the bow drys almost no humid in them! I will put this bow in my garage and open the windows to get fresh air make sure it gets humid in while it drys.

Looking good! It has a very nice shape.

What percentage relative air humidity does your place have? I try to keep my workshop at about 40-50%, which should be pretty safe.

I live in washington seattle, which is rainy most of the time. I have had my bows dried in my apartment room, what ever the reason all those 3 bows were having the same problem ,breaking, during the stringing. inside my apartments room is 30-35% top of that electrical heat does not help. so I will dry this one outside and make sure it has enough humid before I try to string it.
Thank you for the complement

Hi SADO,

shape looks excellent! I?m looking forward, when its braced.
If the photos don?t lie, the transition near the grip (~10cm long) is very thick and sal will start bending little bit to far from grip. Anyway. Before you put the bow on the tepliks, be sure you have opened the bow to about the shape it had without sinewlayer! You have been patient in building the bow, be it too in bracing it. I don?t see any problems with the humity in your rooms.

Good luck

Thank you, peter, you have good eye!!yes that worries me too, but here are the measurements (tapering) ARROW STARTS 15 mm - 13 -10 - 9 - 9 - 9 - 9 -10 then kasan starts, this is without sinew. the core 4 mm horn 5mm I will hope that it will bend properly! (I DID NOT DO FINAL SIDE SINEWS YET ) that is why sides look thinner perhaps in the picture. NOTE=MEASUREMENTS WERE GIVING BY ADAM.

The humid in my room is ok I believe electrical heat in my place ruins the sinew when they dry. I will not put this bow in my room any more , let the bow dry out side with the fresh air in the storage! I think this word DRYING should changed to FORMING!! sinew dries no matter what. It is forming what sinew needs because it is shrinking invisibly! when I heard the word DRYING THE SINEW I was drying the sinew to death!!! I believe sinew forms (dry) with little humid! if there is no humid in the sinew it be comes brittle. other then that I do everything properly I really don't see other reason that my bows were broken. 3 bows were broken same stile like a pencil on the tepelik!!!

PLEASE LET ME KNOW YOUR OPINION!

Thanks,Sado

Hmmm....where did the bows break, respectively everytime at the same place?

In the wooden body I do the fadeout from the grip only in the middle ~5cm long (half of grip-splice), not on the sides, so the cross-section there is like a round-edged flat triangle. At the end of splice the cross-section is rounded as in the whole sal. Correct me, but in your bow it looks like the fadeout ends directly at end of splice - this can weaken the bow there.

Anyway, i never had a break like you discribe. This must be a failure in at least one material (i suppose sinew-layer is to thin) at this place. For this reason i recommend to do an extra sinew-layer. In your case, sinew should be min. 2,5mm thick at centerline over the whole sal.

Hope this helps! Good luck!

Peter, my fade out ends 6 or 7cm from the arrow pass, if that is still long I will do sending on the horn for 1 mm in that area to bend shorter. It is too late the bow is ready. my bows were breaking in different places, like I said they were to much dried , NO HUMID INSIDE, there was no flexibility to even tie them on the tepeliks!!!what so ever

hopefully I will open this

Thanks Peter,Sado

Hi guys, I just found out that the reason all my previous bows were broken had may be something to do with sinew! Look at the pictures how my previous sinew white!! I knew at the time something was wrong with the color , first they would be amber color then in 15 days they were turning in to white color and hard as marble, and look at my new bow I used elk sinew first time, this new bow it has been almost 0ne month now but it is still amber color and I can feel it is alive ,flexible and gives me the feelings that this is it , this should be that way, the sinew should be only get white when you string the bow first time!! !!!! I don't know why ? perhaps the caw sinew I was buying from the same person all those years might be sick cows or something, strange very strange!!

THE LAST LAYER OF SINEW , TODAY I WILL MAKE IT PRETZEL AND WAIT FEW MONTHS . I KEPT THE HANDLE LITTLE THICK TO MAKE SURE i CAN STRING IT SAFELY THEN I WILL DO THE FINAL SENDING AND DETAILS BEFORE I COVER IT WITH LEATHER. ( I MIGHT ALSO STRING IT EARLY TOUGH )
ulubatlihasan
HI GUYS, EVENTUALLY IT IS READY FOR DRYING, WE WILL SEE HOW LONG I WILL WAIT ! I WILL TRY TO KEEP IT DRY FOR 6 MONTHS BUT WHO KNOWS.
Kyudohund
this looks very fine and promising!
ulubatlihasan
Thank you Peter, like I said this sinew feels really good not like previous broken bows sinew! it still amber color gives me confident that i will manage to string this bow without breaking it , hopefully!!!!! anything can go wroong but hopefully this is it!
Uli
the amber color basically shows you that the sinew and glue have joined to make up one more or less homogenous medium - which will not break the light at internal phase transitions. your bow looks very promising. :D

Sadettin Aga, I wish you bow to become a real weapon! 8)
