a Chinese bronze thumb thing...

Hi,

Today I was shown this original bronze artifact. It has a little hook protruding on the top right side...

The dealer says it's a protection worn on the bow hand thumb, and that the arrow shaft would pass on top while being held in place with the little hook...
Romain
Another view.

Do you think he's right ?

The artifact above would be of no use to draw the string, it would come out at the slightest effort.

The hypothesis would be a protection worn on the bow hand, where the arrow would pass on top of the protection.
Uli
:? right, sorry I did overread "bow hand" in your comment
and - the notch would cause harm to the index finger instead of stabilizing the arrow. ;-)

It's a leather-worker's thimble, not a thumbring.

:D :D :D

What's a thimble ?
Dave
A thimble is a device used by leatherworkers and sewing types to protect the end of the thumb when pushing needles through leather, felt, cloth etc.

European thimbles have for a long time been made of silver, gold and other metals, and look like a dimpled helmet for your thumb.

but the european one look much nicer than this one, they have pictures on it and may be made of metals or ceramics - my grandma used to collect them
