An "old" Hungarian bow
It is debated why Hungarian bows had bandages as fishtail spliced cores do not need them. There is a possibility that in the 10th century no fishtail splices existed and the core pieces were simply glued on the top of each other. This bow is constructed that way. Two ash laths (85x4x1 cm) was bent at 30 degree (at this area the thickness was only 7mm) to produce the bend for the ears. The other end was bent slightly to produce the grip reflex. This later area of the two laths was glued on the top of each other in 15 cm length. The ear was prepared by gluing a 30 cm long piece of wood on the top of the bent area covering the whole length of the ear and extending into the arms in about 8 cm. The grip has also a raiser and reinforced by bone plates from the sides. The ears are also reinforced in whole length by horn coverage. The ends of the grip and the base of ears have sinew bandage and are covered by fish skin.
The bow is 135 cm ntn, and 57 pounds at 28?. It is shot and owned by my friend Dr?k?.

Nice work. I'd like to see one done with bone siyah plates as well.
I do wonder about brace height though. The loop looks like it is really interfered with by the width of the base of the siyah. The serving is splitting apart with the friction.
Higher brace height or string bridges would solve that. I realize that bridges were likely not traditional but perhaps this gives another reason for adding them while preserving a higher energy storing brace height.

Back in 2006 I posted the replica of the bow of Magyarhomor?g. This bow had bone plates at the ears. However such a bow needs 100+ draw weight to perform well.
I agree the brace height could higher but no string bridges on Hungarian bows x-(.

Orda, I disagree shorter string loops carry the danger that the string will slip to the side and the bow could brake.

Very nice bow, the sinew looked great also very good reflex and tiller. Whats the bow mass?
The bow shoot 172 fps at 10.5 Gpp pretty inpresive, was this done with dacron or fast flight ? A fast flight string could add 5-7 fps at this number.

I remember seeing the bone siyah plate bow now. I like the more refined sinew wrapped elbows better on the new bow.
I think there is more of a chance that the long loops will be split open at the base from repeatedly striking the keel on the base of the siyah. They must have used smaller loops or higher brace height for sure.
Be nice to see an authentic string on one of these bows to complete the whole picture.

Thanks for the comments. The bow is 570 gr, the string is dacron.
Yes the string is a problem. To date we do not have a durable natural material for the string. One does not want to ruin a year work.

Have you tried natural silk? I have never had the chance, but it apparently has very similar properties to dacron.
Other than that, the texts recommend hides (camel, maybe horse, or human : / ), and of course, sinew. Far too much work for my liking - making a bow is enough in itself.

I have tried silk on a 80# bow, at 26 strands it would stretch more then 15 cm. Silk stretches too much..... not a viable option for bow strings.
Interesting. As far as I know silk was used on t?rkish bows. Have you used on longbows?

Regarding silk I'm under he impression that it was widely used historicaly. I have made only one silk string yet, but did not experience exsessive stretching. But the string was made from monofilament silk, not spun. If I remember rightly it was around 140 strands made for a 53# MB-type bow, and weighs very little if you exclude sinew stringloops, thickness is about the same as dacron. It has made maybe a cuple of dozen shots without breaking, but I'm not using it for day to day shooting.

I have used spun silk maybe that is why it was stretching, i will try and use monofilament silk. Thanks for the insight :).

Spun silk has "plasticity" e.g. it will stretch and KEEP the new legth (It will therefore fail at some point). The reason is simple:
The fibres are relatively short and they will slide because a short fibre has less surface and therefore less friction to the other fibres in the string.
This goes for other fibres as well of course, but silk in particular because the individual fibres are very slippery.

You are definitely right about the slipperiness of the fibres. I have made only continuous filament silk strings. While it was necessary to use beeswax on linen strings to allow the threads to move against each other to even out the tension, pre-tensioning silk strings was a breeze because the individual threads slid over each other so easily. I did find that knotting the tunc had to be done carefully. If the loops are fully served like Chinese strings and some of the ramie strings in Dresden, there is no problem but unserved loops need to be held together by a glue and resin mix as Adam Karpowicz mentions in his book.
