Turkish Quiver
Has anyone a picture from an old quiver from the top? I am interested how the arrows were hold in place.
There were several different systems used. There is a quiver that was given by the Sultan to Ferdinand of Tyrol in the early 1500s which has a leather insert sewn into the mouth of the quiver. there are over 40 individual holes punched into this for the arrows arranged in a pattern. The holes are round and edged in colour. I have seen this one personally from close up.
There is a Crimean Tatar quiver with two longitudinal straps running from the leading edge of the quiver mouth to the trailing edge. Three straps cross this making nine divisions for arrows.
I have made both kinds of arrow spacers and they both work. The first one is good for target arrows and small bodkin points of the types favoured by the Turks. The second works with broad heads too. I must point out that the types of broad heads used by the Turks and Tatars were all with rounded backs to the point so they don't catch on the way out. Barbed broad heads were not compatible with the shooting techniques they used.

Thanks a lot. I wasn't sure about the string thing. So you know if there was a second holder deeper in the quiver?
There is no need. The quivers usually had an internal wooden base. It was cut so that the grain was parallel to the axes of the arrows; even target points tend to grip this. With broad heads this worked too. The larger heads spaced the arrows out at the bottom of the quiver too.
I used flat strips of leather for the second type. You can have one set wider than the other and cut slots for the narrower straps to pass through. Its very simple and can be replaced if it wears out.
