Turkish flight bow 43.5 inches 1st attempt

This is my first attempt at a Turkish flight bow. It is 43 1/2 inches ntn. 3 piece core with a hornbeam handle and rowan limbs. Horn is about 3mm thick and glued with non matching grooves. This is the first time I have tried non matching grooves and I had a total delamination on one limb when stringing for the first time. The whole horn came off in one intact piece and didn't damage the core at all! I have no idea what I did wrong with that horn but I re-glued it and have had no problems so far. The bow seasoned with uneven reflex but now appears to be ok at 22 inches of draw. Estimated full draw weight is around 75/80#.
I have made some hollow tonkin flight arrows which weigh from 190 grains to 290grains for it too. If it survives to full draw I'm looking forward to letting them fly :)

Dang that looks good, Mike! You do good work!!
mikekeswick
Thanks Ken :) I do try ;_
It has been to 26 now and been strung all day. It is very stable and is behaving itself very well. I will be taking it down to my flight range this weekend all being well. The only difficulty is stringing it by myself - I will have to take my stringing board with me!
I have high hopes for this one as the string tension is very high and my arrows are much better than any I have made and shot before. Maybe this combo will give me my first 400 yds shot?

Very nice! Hope it survives 28" well

want pics of arrows too

Is the string fast-flight? don't destroy the notches
mikekeswick
Yes me too!!
This string isn't fastflight but I have used it on my Turkish warbows upto 65# and no problems. I'll see what this bow does with B50 first before I risk it!

When you've got nothing else to do, Mike, make me a bow like that with half the draw weight -- 35-45#!!
mikekeswick
Ken - if you mean that I could but you'd be looking at a long wait!
I managed to get out yesterday for a bit of flight shooting with this bow.
Conditions weren't ideal and the bow started to show a little twist on the lower limb for some reason when I took it to full draw. I had no heat source so couldn't fix it where I was....therefore most shots were at about 23/24 inch draw. It has a fairly heavy tillering string on it at the moment as well.
The best shots were around 320yds.
This gives me hope for a properly drawn arrow to go a good way further. Next weekend I will have all the small issues sorted out and will let some fly!
The bow starts to stack at about 25 ish so there will be a good weigh gain in the last few inches. It shows little string follow even after being strung all afternoon.
I want to plot the force/draw curve as this bow feels unlike any other I have made with very high intial tension then a definite 'let off' through the mid draw then a fairly stiff ramp up for the last few inches.
I have high hopes for this bow.

Heck yes, Mike. Do it. I can wait. I'm only 68, so I've got a few good years left in me! I wouldn't want anything fancy finished, I would do that myself, so I could add my own blood to the project. I don't even need a long draw -- my normal draw is 27", but I've got nock points at 25" and 26" too.

Freaking awesome man! Looking forward to a f/d curve. If you want you can post measurements and I'd plot you one
Also a bit tempted to give you lots of money for a bow.. though I think I should look for bowyers not too far away from me?
Hopefully I'll have time and patience to learn to make them myself one day.. though the twist alone drives me nuts

awesome bow! my 1st bow have similar size (44"), currently been seasoned for 2 months..

may I know the mid limb thickness? I'm expect to get 70# at 28".. my configuration is 5mm horn, 2.5mm bamboo core & 3.5mm sinew.. thanks
mikekeswick
Sorry I've only just seen your message.
The midsal limb thickness is about 12mm

Modified arrows and a lighter string = 27 inch draw and i'm getting a few shots right on 400yds.
I feel it might have a bit more in it too as it is equilibrated at 60 - 70% rh right now. I will be making a sealed box for it soon that I can keep below 50% rh.
KenH
That way when you come to the States to shoot at Bonneville Flats (RH maybe 20% yours will be half way to ambient dry! <grin>
