My last bow
Hello, this is my last bow,I don't know exactly what kind of bow it is(Syrian?),any suggestion?Anyway the bow is 128cm long ntn and is about 59#@30".The core is made of 5 pieces (ash for handle and ears, maple for the limbs). The horn strips are 39 cm long and come from a single side-piece of buffalo-horn cut in half lengthwise...not ideal but good enough to make a bow.I cover the sinew with silk,I sealed it with a few coats of copal varnish, then I decorated the bow using metal powder(not true gold) and the same varnish as medium (plus a drop of boiled linseed oil). The pattern is a personal variation of the turkish hatayi pattern.

Beautiful Francesco!! Love the artwork. What kind of glue did you use for the silk cover on the sinew?I will need to cover a hornbow in about six months.

Awsome bow, can't wait until I can do that!
You draw the bow with two fingers, I should try that.

Is the post-nock tip length historical?
Francesco, this bow looks great, I like the way you adorned the back of the bow. What kind of silk you?ve used for the backing? Is it a black silk-cloth, is it mulberry-silk, is it a thick cloth of silk?
Have you ever done a bow using horn-slats cut out of the side-walls of the horn? My experiences with these side-walls of the horn are different. I prefer to use the reflexing parts of the horn.

I used thin silk fabric to cover the back (and edges),glued with hide glue. It'very light, obviously isn't waterproof, but once saturated with varnish I think it will give a good protection, adding very low mass to the bow.Michael,I used for this very bow a side-wall piece of horn:it was very wide so I cut it in half lengthwise and obtained both strips. It needs some work of flattening and straightening by heat. This is the third bow made using side pieces of horn.I'm making another one with very short pieces (31cm):I hope it will work.Just to make experience and not wasting horn.
