Can the outer covering of a tendon be used to make sinew glue? Some of it I can pound into threads but it is very hard.
Eppo Wolgen
Matt, no need to waste your time and efford on the outer casings. That stuff isn't very strong anyway. Send it to the glue factory :) Yes, it makes fine sinew glue .

You mean I shouldn't use it on the back of a bow? In tbb.1 they say it is sinew but just hard to shread.

BTW thanks for the sinew :D

You wouldn't want to use sinew glue to glue sinew. :( At the temperature it needs to be heated to become completely liquid, it will cook the sinew you are trying to glue on.

Sinew glue to glue wood or horn is ok, though.

I was just wondering, I will be using knox geletion for the sinewing job anyways.

Is rabbit hide glue good for sinewing? Is it good for horn gluening?
That is only type of good glue I can make. Does anybody know is pig hide glue good for anything? I saw somewhere that hide glue is produced from pig hide but I don't know is it strong enought for sinewing and for horn gluening.

I think that somebody should write a very good article about glues and glue making. Somebody who make and use home made animal glues.

hi, sometimes I make the glue by myself, thats cause I like to do it or to demonstrate it for pupils or other interested people. But I need to much of it and to make it by myself is indeed more expansive than to buy it.

I collect the leavings of the jobs I do the whole day like splicing sinew, cutting or rasping horn, leatherworks (but take care: don?t use chemically tanned leather, otherwise the collagen as the main part of the glue will be destroyed), rawhide. If I?ve enough I put these leavings into a pot, add water to cover all and heat it, when it is boiling I reduce temperature for to simmer it for around 4 hours. Don?t forget to cover the pot with a cap. Then strain the glue on an old baking tray(big enough) and let the glue cool down and harden. This could last some days. When the glue is hard, hammer it till you have small chips. Ready, take care humidity, mice, cats, moths and whoever would like it.

The best hide-glue is the so-called rabbit-glue, but it means that it is made of skins of little animals, cause their skins are more tough, that means better glue-power. I?ve used it succesfully for hornbows too.

There is much mystery in making the old glues, I?m sure that every bowyer has its own receipe, but the basics are always the same.

Is cat small enought? We have 100 cats per every person. If that glue is good I am going to open glue factory.

Is hide glue good for sinewing?

hi Rapsod, cats are tough animals........take care.....one cat has 7 lifes!
Hide-glue is the best glue for sinew-backing.

Cats and rabbits aside, I hope everyone could follow the point I made earleir. The strength of the glue is only one issue.

When you make a bow, the glue has to be thin enough to penetrate two or three different materials - say wood, horn and sinew. Some strong glues, such as some fish bladder glues, can do that at a relatively low temperature where they won't actually damage the materials that they are gluing. But other glues require a temperature that is much to high.

As a general guide, if the glue is too hot for your hand when it reaches the consistency you want, then it is too hot for the sinew.

One cat 7 hides.
What if I am Ironman? I can touch lava. Is that too hot for bow making?

Jokes aside, glue must have penetrating power or to say it in another way low viscosity.

Does anybody did sinewing job wit hide glue from this site http://www.dick.biz It is good german site about tools.

Look at this site:

Stephen, you are right, nevertheless rabbit-glue does a fine job in backing bows with sinew. If you heaten rabbit-glue more than 60-65?C you will disturb the kolagen.

Rapsod, Dick is a dealer, he doesn?t take care very much what he sells, look at www.kremer-pigmente.de that?s it!

i am use sinew glue glue sinew strings, one deg's sinew strings and a few sinew make glue, when these sinew glue and sinew strings dry to one layer(has no wood), it has more strength than the hide glue and sinew string dryed, it is 1-2mm thickness,3cm wide and 40cm long, same draw weight as one layer new cuting bamboo (also the bamboo and wood has same thickness), it need more than 15 or 20 deg's sinew make a "sinew bow"(who hear of all bow make form sinew?)

but i must tell you when these sinew string and sinew glue dryed it can use hand rend into two or three part(but it is not very easy),maybe i add more water soaking sinew

Sinew glue to glue wood or horn is ok, though.

the sinew glue need a smooth surface for glue them firm and cogent
