Mechanics of bow & arrow by Dr. Bob Kooi
Hi everyone,
In my research on traditional bow construction, I came across Dr. Bob Kooi's web page and his numerous scientific papers dealing with the mechanics of the bow and arrow.
I find these papers fascinating (I'm a newbie, yes  ), of particular interest is the effect of the curvature, length and weight of the siyah on the performance of the bow: http://www.bio.vu.nl/thb/users/kooi/kooi96.pdf

You should see his thesis! He kindly sent me a copy and it was fascinating. It requires real concentration and a good grasp of mathmatics, but he has very interesting ideas.
The research of Dr. Kooi is a must for every bowery. He is a scientist and I need really a lot of time to read and to understand his theories. But it has turned out to be very helpful for my work.
Anyway theory has its limits, and Dr.Kooi himself has to declare this fact when he compared Turkish hornbows with modern recurves and the Turkish hornbow turned out to be better than the theory. He tries to explain it with the special composition and the cross-sections of the Turkish hornbows. But this is beyond his theories.

People, why to read when you can see it in almost real time. Go to this site
http://www.flightarchery.com and search for term supertiller. That supertiller is program based on kooi's formulas. It is very good program and there is also document on how to use it. It is problably under "bows" topic on main page.
