Fish glue

Hello, my first post here. I have already learned a good deal from sifting through the older threads but there a couple of questions I'd like to ask.

I'm about to start working on my first composite bow and I have to buy some fish glue. I can get Russian fish bladders, but they are very expensive (40? per 100g) and I am not sure whether that is a good price or not. I also have no idea if 100g is sufficient for an entire bow.

Also, from what I understand horn could be joined with hide or rabbit glue without descreasing the overall performance. Is that correct?

Hi Tomaz,

I buy sturgeon fish glue form a dealer in Spain, www.agaragar.net. They sell it in sheets, for about 33?/100 g. I think they import the glue form Kremer Pigmente (Germany). It is a very good glue. I have used it in two composite turkish bows and is very strong in both: horn to wood and sinew to wood. Maybe 100 g. is enough, but is better buy more to be sure. I have not tried yet, but I think that you can mixed it with the cheaper rabbit glue. I think more people here can help you more on this.

They also sell Salianski issinglass glue (sturgeon), and the last mentioned sturgeon fish glue in raw bladder, but both of them are more expensive.

Good luck with your composite bow!

Hi Tomaz.

You can get the fish glue from www.kremer-pigmente.com .
Its price is 40EURO/100g. This is expensive, but this is the best fish-glue you can get! 100g is enough.

I glue the horn to the wood with fish-glue. For the sinew-backing hide glue works very well. Its price is 2.40EURO/100g.

Good luck, Michael
