Question on Spacer for Handle
I had just enough horn to put it on the working section of the limbs but not the siyah glue joint nor the handle area. I plan to wrap the siyah joint with sinew, and the siyahs themselves are arched and should provide the needed stiffness. But my handle area is narrowed, I have a piece of wood glued on the back side but I am sure I need to bolster the belly side for added stiffness. Normally I see pieces of bone or horn butt-spliced in this area, is this because wood is not strong enough? Or can I use a dense wood such as osage in this area?
Thanks in advance for any advice. I have some pics of the current state of my project, in the "skinny horn strips" thread.

I used a wooden strip on the belly of the grip on my Gogops style bow. You should get away with it as long as the grip is stiff enough and you are not going for a huge draw weight.

Thanks, I will probably go with a wooden spacer then.
Also, someone questioned my not running the horn strips out over the siyah joint. As the siyah has an arch from the first of the v-splice, I had not thought it necessary to cover this with horn. But maybe I need to reinforce this area? I might be able to make some additional horn strips from the lower-most piees of the gemsbok horns. I had cut off the first 6" or so since it was so bumpy and thin between bumps. But it would probably be possible to make some thin pieces that could underlay the v-splice. Or I could use wood there too, or just count on the sinew wrap to give additional strength, as this will need to be done regardless (to hold down the horn strips ends).

Here is how I dealt with the lack of horn in the handle and v-splice areas.
I heat-bent a strip of quartersawn osage and glued it on the belly side of the handle, had a small gap so I pushed a wedge of osage in there. When all this is dry, I'll trim and then possibly lay another lam on the osage. I really don't want the bow bending into this handle, I'm pretty sure it'll pop if it does.
I also glued a thin piece of walnut over each siyah v-splice just to slightly bolster the area. I'll still wrap this with plenty of sinew for additional support. I don't want the limb bending into this splice, I think that would be the end of this bow as well.
Here's a link to some pics of where I'm at.
