horn strip length
Hi,
I'm after some advice.
Some friends and I are on the brink of endeavoring to attempt some composite bows. One of us has found a set of buffalo horns in a shop. Water buffalo, not bison, mind you. My query is about the cutting of these horns.
It's a bit of a long shot, but would you happen to know the length of the horns used in the http://atarn.org/islamic/turkish_bow/cutting_horn.htm tutorial? Here are the measurements of the horn we found. The measurements are of both horns together mounted like a trophy:
The outside curve (longest) = 50" from tip to tip, the inside curve = 43". As the tips themselves are fairly slender, we would need to take off at least 3-4" (from each end) just to get a reasonable width for the strips. The mid-section is 5.5" wide and 3.5" high.
Are these horns of sufficient size to get three sets of horn strips from?
Thanks,
Dave

2 considerations, first, you don't say what kind of bow you're after, the leghth of strips should be around 20", consider that they should be around 1 1/2" wide "raw", to finish at around 1 1/8" mounted on the bow.
The base (the last 2" of each horn), can go down to 3/4".
You say they are 50 tip to tip... you would need to measure each one of them, isn't there any kind of "bone" between the 2?
Check the thickness of the base, some horns are thicker, some are very thin, so you would need to eliminate 1-2 or 3" fraom the base too.
Also, saying those dimension say very little, it depends on how thick the walls are and what percentage of the horn is hollow.
Do not consider more than 1-2 sets of strips.
Consider also purchasing them from Peter Cua from the Philippines, he will probably know what you need (he's been deepening his knowledge quite a lot lately), he's also selling almost finished strips and precut ones... less waste in shipping charges.
Also Martin Hillshop in the UK sells good horns, although they are not "paired", but very nice.

Unforuatly he is moving (as he told me) and will be back again beginning of september (as far as I remember)
I really recommend him for his sinews and horn. Nice contact.
P.S: I'm also from Germany and I got sinews from him at "high-BSE" times without problems.
Peter Cua also it a highly recommended source for Horn as already mentioned.
