Nocks cut into the wood shaft itself, called self nocks, are probably most common. The nock is often the largest part of the shaft. Made from a "Parallel" shaft (that is in the shape of a dowel) the nock is shaped, the area under the fletches is reduced tapering somewhere just forward of center, and then tapering just slightly to the point. Thus one would have a barreled arrow with an expanded nock. Some version on this theme makes superior arrows of wood. Do not forget to add a lashing at the nock to prevent its splitting. -j-
