I saw short reportage about Shibata on italian national tv. The name of show was "passaggio a nord ovest" (I think).

Few things I rimember:
-he use black deer hide glue (why black? aren't thay transparent)
-he put lamination over steam to slow down glue drying
-he have apprentice
-apprentice must literally steal all secrets of trade
-shibata have secret room where he hold precious woods, very old bamboo
and who know what else

Hey how cool this is!
I was at that same dojo last week! My brother has pictures of the archers as they shot. They noticed I seemed to have an interest (more than just an interest) and invited us in to watch their practice. We also have a short video of the session that my friend took, so hopefully he will send it to me soon.

About the glue, I have no idea, but one time my glue ended up quite dark like that. I think it might have been because my rawhide was dark as well, doesn't happen with the lighter ones. Or maybe it has secret ingredient? :D

Btw, while there I noticed a difference in the bows speed. The bamboo yumis shot faster than the fiberglass ones of same pound. They were very well crafted and each one was different in that the tips were designed differently.

Bamboo yumis are each unique because they are formulated on an exact number of nodes on the back and belly and no two bamboo poles are exactly the same. however several bows can be made from the same pole.

I think that the son in law of the old master has taken over the title Kanjuro Shibata. Can anyone confirm? -j-

Yes, that is true.
