Question about Yumi performance.

I previously thought that although the bow-wood is of good quality and such wooden strips are well-laminated, wooden laminated bows were just laminated bows, and unable to match composite bows of horn in performance.

However, I began to question myself again as I've read through some of the articles of this forum concerning Yumi performance.

One member from Finland said about a Yumi test, in which a 44# Yumi shot an arrow of about 500 grains with the initial velocity of 185 feet per second.

Recalling Mr. Duvernay's testimony that a mid-50 # Korean hornbow shot 400~500 grain arrow with the initial velocity of 210-feet/sec, I was quite surprised to see the narrow gap between the performance of these two bows.

Although Yumi is laminated bow with several strips of wood, and allows long draw due to its length, I never thought of bow consisting only wood could match up - although two results above were individual conductions. -hornbows.

What is so 'special' about Yumi?

Sinsigel; What is even more amazing is how the Bhutanese shoot at a target even farther away than a Korean target! (and a MUCH smaller target) with a bamboo self bow made of two slats of bamboo wired together. I cannot wait to get to Korea and see all the different archers shooting at eachothers targets. Thomas; My recollection is that Bhutanese shoot at 150 m.

Sinsigel; I have admired Kyudo forever. My real question is; does becoming a master at standing and shooting at the same target for years make them good at shooting at a different distance?

I guess you know by now that the Organisers at the World Traditional Archery Festival (WTAF) have asked all the participants to shoot at 20m at a 3D deer target, at 60 m. at a Kyudo target, at 80m. Mongolian target, and at 120m. Korean target. This would put anyone who shoots at a constant distance at a disadvantage.

For myself, I would have considered the extreme distance out of bow range. -j-

I also agree with Mr. Farrell's opinion that the bow's range should be measured by its maximum range, rather than the target shooting range.

However, the topic seems to have shifted a bit from the original one.

To reiterate the main question, what traits of Japanese laminated bow made it perform almost as good as composite bows of horn, wood and sinew?
