I split my feathers the same way and bottom is not always flat. There is
some sponge like material. I don't know. This is strange bird I have.

That is normal, after you split the feathers,( and remember that one half will be a right wing and the other a left. ), Make a hand sanding board. Mine is about 150 mm total length X 7mm thick X 40 mm wide. The area where I glue the sand paper is about 80 mm the rest is the handle. after you make that glue different grit sand paper to to each side, I like 80/120 grit. The best way to hold the feather is to put it in a clamp, I use the clamp from my bitzenburger flecher. You can also make a jig with two thin boards and a clothes pin or a spring clamp. I then sand with the 80 grit the spongie part of the using a razer blade trim the edges of the quill down around 3 mm wide. then finish thinning the bottom of the quill down with the 120 grit until its about 1 mm thick.
Once you do a few of them this process is very fast. If you have any questions and then I finishing hooking up this computer and post some pictures.
