KOREAN HB DIMENSIONS/CONSTRUCTION

CHRIS W.
I have been taking in all the info on the Korean bow that is on this site and now have a few questiosn before I begin my own.

My horn strips ar 1 1/8 inches wide and 1/8 of an inch thick. My core is bamboo 1 1/8 inches wide and 3/16 of an inch think.

What is the width of the widest part of the limb?
What is the width at the base of the bend in the siyah?
Is it a staright taper from the widest part of the limb to the base of the siyah?
Does the core and horn taper in thickness along the length of the limb? I uderstand that the core and horn should be of the same thickness. Should they then reduce in thickness by equal amounts along the length of the limb?

In the TBB III - Schmidt makes a 36 inch core and splices in his siyahs for a total of around 50-52 inches (the ear and a few inches of wood limb below the bend in the siyah). Other information I have found speaks of a shorter core of 28-29" with siyah spliced in where the wood of the siyah makes up several (10-11 ") inches of limb before the bend in the siyah. Is one method more traditional, more effective or easier to construct than the other?

Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Chris; Check out my post under "literature" in this forum.

Some dimensions from an old Korean bow of mine: About 15/16 wide and 9/16 thick just above the grip, 7" below the center of the grip it is 1-3/16 w X5/16", that same dimension is at 5-1/2" above the center of the grip.

The limb narrows to 13/16w X 1/2" thick at a place about 2-1/2 " from the bend. All together this is going to be like giving the dimensions of a violin; there are many subtle nuances in the shaping.

Many museum Korean target bows are 126 mm long overall, as is mine. This is probably the magic number. -j-
