The six good qualities of a horn bow
A good quality horn bow should have six qualities which described in ancient Chinese text. From my point of views they are absolute right. Yet,the translation in the book "Chinese Archery" is not all correct(Stephen; If you can revise that in the next print..)....
For all want to build a good quality horn bow these tips are vital..
弓有六善 (The six good qualities of a horn bow)
1.性體少而勁:A bow with less material(less physical weight) but powerful. If a bow is physically heavy but not powerful, that's not good...A lousy bow I said.
2.太和而有力:Good construction and strong. The core constructing, glueing job of wood/core and the sinewing job must be perfect. That make a strongly constructed bow.
3.久射力不屈: It does not weaken after being used for a long time.
4.寒暑如一:Either in the condition of cold winter or hot summer,it remains in same strength.
5.絃聲清實:The string sounds clear and firm.
6.張便正:When strung, a bow is in good alignment and balance. No need for further adjustment.
The text also mentioned about how to achieve those qualities. I won't translate then word by word...
A bow with less materials tend to be strung easier and durable. But Why? why can a bow be physically light weight but powerful? The trick is in the sinewing job. Sinew will stretch when wet, apply the sinew when it is fullly stretched. So when it drying out, it will shrink on bow back and make a stronger bow. Also the bow must be bent to more reflex position which allow the horn and core yield to the sinew shrinking(又揉其材令仰,然後傳角與筋).
Also, Why? why can a bow remain in same condition in cold and hot condition? The trick is not to use too much glue. The strength of a bow come from the sinew instead of glue. Too much glue makes a bow too sensitive to the weather condition. So, a bow with less glue will fit the qualities 3 and 4..Of course less glue means less weight.
My experience is lots of glue makes a safer yet lousy bow. Fewer glue makes a risky yet fast bow. lots of glue hold sinew better, but that makes a bow heavy, weaken after been used for sometime, sensitive to the temperature and humidity. Fewer glue bows won't have those drawbacks, but must be careful to allow the glue enough to hold sinew together.
Also for making a physically light yet powerful bow, all the sinew must be combed through, a bow materials will be efficient only all the sinew fibers are perfectly aligned.
