Dimensions for Mughal bow
Made this plan is it close enough ? comments are welcome.
I'm afraid that you might have too much material that is not working in the siyah.
At a rough guess, you have about 165cc of dense wood and sinew in each of the siyahs. Dry cherry wood is .56 gms/cc, and so the dead weight of each siyah would be around 92gms. Two siyahs weigh 185gms. So the working part of the bow is working on moving that before any energy is transferred to the arrow.
Csaba Grozer made bows like that some time ago and they also had that problem

Are you intending to make this with laminated fibreglass or with horn and sinew?
Groser's reproduction was problematic, though it did shoot accurately. The siyahs matched an original, but the arms were longer to accommodate the more limited bending capabilities of the fibreglass. It never reached a state where the ears approached an angle to the string as great as the originals.

My intension is to build one with horn and sinew.
Is there any information of the originals?
It might not be enough if the middle section is shorted by 3" and the top to 3" that would reduce the length of the non bending part with 4"
This type of bow is perhaps not efficient unless it is a really heavy bow, and i am a beginner in the art of horn bow and not ready to build a + 100 bow yet.

I have several of the originals of these bows. I will see if I have any accurate measurements. Adam Karpowicz wrote a good article in the Journal of the Society of Archer-Antiquaries on these Indian composite bows with a detailed description of a bow.
Actually, beginners usually end up making bows that are heavier than they planned. Making a light bow, you have to use minimum materials, so light bows are more difficult to make than heavy bows. 8)Puzio wrote:

How can I get that article?

Bede i would appreciate if you have some details.
I thought that the more reflex the bow has it would become more sensitive in the first opening of the bow, I wonder if it was beginners luck that the first one ended up with 65lb, with a weight of 356 gms
I'm working on the next one it has all most the same measure just slightly wider and with more reflex. ill thought that the best way is to learn the process is to increase the reflex bow by bow until it becomes a circle.

Bede i was just woundering if you got some mesuerment from your bows ?
I made some adjustement of my first drawing of the siayha

Sorry for the delay. I will have something for you in 24 hours. Some of these bows are packed away. I originally made measurements of angles and widths and thicknesses but I can't find the notebook. I am going to do it over again.
A question: is there any pic in the ATARN or elsewhere in the www posting an original Mughal- bow.
Are there any similarities between a Mughal- and a Khotan- bow?
No doubt, the siyahs are heavy, so it makes sense to make such a bow heavy, but I think it would be worth to examine the impact of such a delicious shaped siyah at different positions of the draw.

There is pictures at the Grayson collection.

I have a dvd of a program on the history cannel Aboute the Mughals where Lukas Novotny showing how its put together and shooting such a bow, He also make a test between a Mughal bow and a Yew long bow, unfortunately they don?t mention the draw weight on both bows son i cant tell how accurate this test is but the Mughal bow had more arrow penetration in to the armour plate then the yew bow.
It is not so easy to estimate angels and dimentions on the tv screen.
And lets wait and see what info Bede has from his bows.

This is a picture of an Indo-Persian bow which does not have quite the pronounced thickness of your reproduction. The limbs are broad but the ears are very narrow. Notice the surprisingly smooth curve of the siyah.
This is just put on a scanner with a ruler, but I thought you might be interested in the proportions. If you save the attachment, you should be able to expand it enough to get the scale from the ruler.
I will have proper measurements of this and another bow soon.

Thanks Bede !!
Yes the its a smooth curve ,and a quite sharp angle at the first bend. It might be possible to make the ears a lot more narrow than i thought I?ll will use natural bent birch to the ears and if my pieces is big enough i will use the same to the kassan section.

Bede. if it not to much problem for you i would appreciate if you could supply me with two measurement.
1. is the bow limb tapered in with?
2. the with of the kassan section from knee up to ear?
I have made a pair with the right bend and they are 3 cm wide at this moment. but it looks to me that they are to wide.I haven't started to work on
the ridge yet and my guess is that there is a lot of weight to reduce there.

The width measurements of the bow I photographed.
Junction of kasan and bending part of limb: 38.33 mm
Upper end of the kasan: 31.77 mm
Base of tip 13.07 mm
Sinew binding at nock: 14.54 mm
Nock width: 11.49 mm

Thanks a lot that will help.
Now its just to start glue all pieces in the core and start carving the ridge i have a set of horn that is at least 4 cm wide and 4 mm thick about 25" long.
I will post some picture later.

Good Luck!
If you need any other measurements, just ask.

This is how the bow it looks at this moment. I glued on the first course of sinew last night and it will take a lot of sinew to get it done.

It is looking very good so far. Good luck.
İt looks very nice, I hope it works well.
The core ( sal ) is maple ? What is the sal thickness?
