How do you polish horn?

I am wondering what processes people use to polish horn on the belly side of their bows. I have a broken Korean horn bow, and the horn is very nice. It is almost like a mirror and I want to do that to my bow.
How would I do that?
Sandpaper, up to what grit?
Anything after that?

I use 1200 grit sand paper after eliminating all the obvious marks with coarser sand papers and files. Jeweller's rouge is good for a high polish.

Horn is very like fingernails. I had one friend who polished a horn thumb ring with a fingernail file and some emory boards. You could see your face in it.

I'd have my wife explain it but she is kind of shy about those things, either way just don't do it in public!

Hi,

To polish the water buffalo horn I use tooth paste, after the fine sand paper.

You may get it on the horn, and rub(use cotton cloth) with all in your heart.

It will shine by itself!

I use first a red polishing compound, than a white one... the white (or blue) one really leaves a shiny surface, I even polish an old watch resin glass with it. Works great.
I also found sandpaper called "micro mesh"... gets up to 12,000 grits...

hi you all,
I do the finsih with dried horsetail(equisetum) after having sanded the horn with at least 400 grit-paper(in Germany the blue one:grits fixed with hideglue on linen). The horsetail produces a patina and gives a kind of shelter to the horn, cause it is rich in some minerals, especially silica.
