Horn Bow Plans Needed

I am looking for step by step plans to building a Horn Bow. For my first attempt I am not picky as to what exact style of asiatic bow I wish to make, just what is easiest.

I have been told of the 4 hour video and I am making arrangement to buy it but I was hoping someone could help me get some illustrated documents that goes through each step visually with demensions, materials, etc.

I know that there are infinate choices to be made, but for my first bow I am happy to let someone else make them for me and just do exactly what they say.

After that I will feel confident to deviate from design.

Thank you.

GC,

The horn bow is arguably the most complex style of bow to craft. If you haven't made other types of bows, such as selfbows, bamboo-backed bows, etc., I would recommend starting with them first. A good source to work from is the Traditional Bowyer's Bible (Vols. 1-3).

I have VOl 1 & 2 of the Bowyer Bible plus Dean Torges books and video. I have made several Hickory and Maple self bows, one Bamboo backed osage bow, and some rattan bows. All have been standard flat bow or long bow style. Next I plan on making a Hickory recurve.

One thing that I found very helpful with my previous bow making was access to step by step instructions with photo and specific demensions. I can't say I followed them all to the letter but it was an excellent guide for my first bow. After that I was comfortable with exploring things on my own.
I have ordered horns strips from Peter Cau and Sinew from a guy on ebay. Something this spring I want to start my asiatic horn bow. I am told to expect it to take between 6 months and a year.

I have also just ordered the Horn bow video that has been much talked about on this forum.

When I think about how long it will take to make I feel mor pressure to get it right, or right enough, the first time. With my self bows if after 10 to 20 hours of work the bow snapped I was sad but I got over it. If after working for a year my bow snaps I will be mor ethan a little sad.

SO far I have found many people on this forum or are very happy to work with me step by step, but I still wish I had a physical guide to reference. But I bet the video will be more than suffiecent.

Thank for you advise and let me know if you know where I can find more information.

Green; I have always thought that those northern Asiatic Two wood sinew backed bows would be a doable middle step to prototyping a hornbow. A Siberian man posted plans on Thomas' site several years ago. There was also such a bow published in Primitive Archer mag. that was noted here some time ago. These would be Buryat, Tuva types, Chinesey influenced. Excellent pinache. -j-

Green, there are two back issues of Primative Archer that go in to the making of a horn bow, and they can still be ordered. Volume 1, issue 2. and Volume 5, issue 4. and as well as "The bowyers bible Volume 3.

Tazarift, how much info is in teh BB3 on hornbows. I've got BB1, and ordered a few of the Primitive Archer backorders, along with a video on how to make a asiatic bow. I've been reading a lot on this website (thanks everyone for the great info and PICS!!!). Does the BB3 have that much info in it?

BTW, Is Spruce ok for the syahs?

Not the best wood for that... use a light wood, but not as soft as spruce! You should be using a light hardwood, from ash to mulberry, also hackberry or maple...

Cheers Alberto :D

Also, I have some nice bulls horns with beautiful colours through them, with a natural curve. They're not long enough to be used for the limbs but they're perfect to be shaped into syahs. Is it possible to use just horn for the syahs instead of wood?

I ask because I read an old Primitive Archer magazine that had a mongolian bow which used a bone core for the syahs.

Green, if you have the issues that I refered to, then you should have all the info you need. Volume 3; it is just a very good book to have and gives some insite to design ideas that may help in makeing and designing your hornbow. It also has a chapter on the making of a Korean hornbow, the detail and the dimentions are there but not the best to follow.
