Oregon Maple

Hi everyone,

I live in northern California and the overwhelmingly dominant species of maple out here is Acer Macrophyllum better known as Oregon Maple or Bigleaf Maple. Does anyone know if this species is a hard enough maple to make a suitable core? I've got lots of it out here but I don't want to do all the work of cutting a tree down and splitting it, just to find out Oregon Maple is too soft!

Thanks alot, any help would be greatly appreciated! And if this Species is worthy I'll post a picture of the tree I'm planning to cut for you guys.

Hey thanks a lot dklynx, that was very helpful indeed! I suppose Oregon Maple is too soft to make a suitable core seeing as sugar maple scored almost twice as high on that hardness test. Thats rather frustrating since Oregon Maple seems to be the only species available in this area.

Well I realize this is a rather obscure question, but does anyone have knowledge of a species that would be suitale for Cores that grows in the Coastal forrests of the Northwest U.S.!?

I suspect dogwood would be a good core wood if you can find a good straight tree or check with musical instrument makers , wood turners also.

Pretty hard to beat eastern hard maple though , it is so uniform and considering the amount of work a composite bow is , well worth getting eastern hard maple.
