This bow started 2 year before, 104 cm ntn, 385 gr total weight and 81#@24.3
Middle of the sal horn 4,3 mm( with convex 5,5mm) , yew core 5,3mm, snew 2mm. Dry snew is 65gr, dry glue is 55 gr, drying period is 1,5 year.
I cut the yew from İda ( Kazdağları) mountain, it is waited in the form for 4 month.
Bow covered by birchbark.

Cem, that's so nice to see you used a yew core, I'm very courious if you have had any issues, as already mentioned, with yew accepting glue.
As JJ mentioned, the slats appear to be sapwood only, but the colour of your wood reminds me rather of heartwood of a female tree, which in many cases is lighter than the heartwood of a male tree, sometimes quite pale. I'm curious too, did you use only sapwood then?

My yew is not big tree, it is about 15cm diameter branch. I found heartwood of yew is very brittle and greasy, it has very thin grains. Heatwood spesific gravity is high but I worried for the accepting the glue so I used the sapwood.Sapwood of the yew is softer and S.gravity is lower, in addition it is very flexible. I do not suggest thin sapwood for stability. I see why English bowyers used the heatwood for the belly . I have to say climate is very important , it makes very differences.
I laminated the ash for the tips ,couse tip yew wood are thin.
Adam, it is short bow so 65 gr is enough. Sides are 5mm.

I ve a lot of yew what looking like yours. May I would give it a try.....
It is a very handy wood, especially for heat corrections and bend.

Yew can be heatbent like rubber. But it can split very easy, that?s why it should not be used in the nock, where the string puts enormous pressure on a little spot. Even in Selfbows, but only in the one-sided nock type, this can lead to damage. I had some Alamannic bows split right under the string.

i can got lots cheap split yew 6-10CM diameter , and lots yew in air dry times split and lots node on it, very hard find the straight grain yew,all the wood split at here and mildew bamboo , thanks for bad weather i can soak it and after soaking it can dry very fast and very easy break :shock:

Could you tell how thick your cores were when you bent them and how long did you steam them for? Did you bend them with the sapwood on the outside of the bend or the inside (next to form)?

thanks, lot's fine material and fine craftwork we can see you do it form turkish,i afraid wood growth too fast in warm area, and the wood ring very fine(about1:1,3-5mm each) in Russia-canada-northchina. i see some people cut circle some hide of the tree or defilade/cover the leafage in summer avoid growth too fast, if we can wait it growth for 10 years :)

I believe young branch or tree(I do not know about bamboo) are the best for composite bows that grown in cold climate. Such tree grains are thick, flexible and clear-without knot. İn addition I think cold climate makes the high s.gravity. Thin grain or cold climate grown young tree = high s.gravity and good stability.

This is actually not thin, when it comes to yew. It is 50 rings/inch witch is mediocre. I think high quality yew is over 100 rings/inch (!!).

Or you could polish your bow to be so shiny that is will reflect the evil eye back to its caster. (like medusa).

I?ve seen yew whose yearrings can only be seen with a magnifying glass. But other than stated in a lot of books and in a lot of people?s thinking, yearring density alone in yew has no influence on wood quality. I had lots of beautiful yew with very fine grain that disappointed as a bow, and ugly wide ringed pieces that made exceptional bows. Of course, it can be the other way round, too...

I have to agree with JJ on that, the amount of growtrings in yew doesn't reflect the wood density or quality. A lot of the premium quality European yew staves I've seen and handled had moderately thick growthrings, most apparently growing conditions make for the difference in the wood's properties.
I've seen yew staves from Oregon and Canada, which sometimes need magnifying glass to count the growthirings, but the wood was very light in hand and sometimes very brittle.

Turkish target bows covered by birchbark and leather , birchbark is not only for flight bows. I do not paint over birchbark, just varnished.
