NEW COMPOSITE CORES

Here is a variety of composite cores which i have just finished putting together over the last week. 5 of them. Other than the ottoman, i don't know if any of these styles have particular names.

I have been experimenting with using wood as the belly lam, as horn is not easy to get here, or expensive; plus it's hard to process. Jack Farrell suggested that the turkish style is simply too highly reflexed, and concentrates the bend too narrowly in one portion of the sal, to accomodate a wooden belly. I can see that's true, and have created the cores in order to carry on the experiment.

Please look at them, and tell me what you think (anybody) would be the most suitable belly material for each, adding why. I have slats of ipe and osage prepared, about 5 mm thick. I should be getting some horn in the next month or so. So thanks in advance, here we go.

The first group are all cored with yew. the second set has cores of osage. The grip material in all but one is black locust.

The siyahs were made of black locust or yew. All were steam bent.

Some of the Handle-Sal transitions don't appear any thicker then Sal's themselves, do you plan to build up the transititions with sinew in order to prevent them from bending?

p.n. i intend for that part of the bow to bend. I am going to cover it with sinew to prevent it from breaking. That is the standard method, unless i'm way off base.

Radius, were the core and syahs rough sawn or quarter sawn? Trying to figure out the way the grain should be running prior to steaming/bending. Thanks bud!

i have found i get the most problems from 1/4 sawn, actually. from now on, i'm going for plain sawn.

on my way to mail your fish bladders as we speak.

i got the siyahs on the one which was missing them:

black locust, like the riser

I guess this one being the most reflexed will require horn definitely.
