Quivers from ElGur
Hi did you ever hear about quivers of ElGur?
We try to do replicas from museum etc. For now only from leather.
What do you think about? Thanks for answers...

That is a beautiful piece of leatherwork. The suspension can be improved. In all but a few cases, Turkish quivers had two slots in the two points on the leading edge of the quiver. The straps are passed through the slots and secured by metal bosses with loops soldered to the back. Because the surviving belts for quivers have slots or metal fittings to take the suspension loops, if the straps have no buckles, they would have to be built into the belt.
From what I have seen, outside Persian miniatures where both straps have buckles on some occasions, the top strap would be directly attached to the belt. Some quivers with surviving straps have the lower strap made with a light thong knotted through a slot in the belt. The principle of this suspension is that the straps are not free to move along the belt. In order to correctly position the quiver in relation to the body, some elaborate belts have one or two buckles on the back of the belt plus a belt hook or buckle at the front for putting on or taking off the belt. The rear buckles are for adjustment.
The loop for the bow case is free to slide on the belt in contrast. So too is the third or balancing strap on the inside face of the quiver which has been a feature of quivers in Turkey since the 1500s.

Hi Bede,
thank you very much for yours information. As a first I must appologize my English language. I am not so skill and I will need some time to translate. It seems to be quite complicate.
May I ask you for any pictures please? Thank you very much.
Here are my rare photos of turkish quivers

I would like to be better and I will do the best to do IT.
For now I am limit by sort of buckles and so on... Maybe only I am limited? :-)

Eleazar; your work is quite good and the photograph file is also quite excellent. Keep up the good work. Thanks for sharing.
Hi jack farrell,
thank you very much. If you have some idea what to do better, write it here.

Well it looks like the tooled leather quivers are also painted.
One difficult aspect of Ottoman quivers, the ones which the museums display are probably just the best of the best, are so fine that they are almost impossible to reproduce.
Would be interesting to see more which are not of a royal person. Ginny posted some of these once from a Swedish collection.

Jack, the pictures from Skokolster were posted here http://atarn.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=972 by boywer tom.
There are no longer available, I don't know the reason.
Eleazar, your quiver is great, can you tell something about the technique used for carving the leather? You did it in classical way or did you made a pattern?
Thanks for pictures!

Hi Ginny,
The quivers are whole hand made without using die. I am not quite sure what do you mean classical way. What I know, I decorate quiver about 30 hours. Time to time I think I am like tinsmith. (Thaks we have audiobooks)
Few day for now I will finish other quivers. In next way I would like to upgreat some details as you advice me. Thank you once more.

Here is a link to a generic Turkish quiver I built many years ago. The arrows were my practice arrows of the time and are not meant to look authentic. The orange ones are for a siper.
The spacers on the outside face come from two Persian miniatures where they appear to be bone or ivory. Metal key posts work just as well.

If you were basing your quiver on the one of Ferdinand of Tyrol, I have a drawing of the inside face a friend made when it was in Australia. It has not been mounted for use and hand no slots cut into the face.
I somehow managed to post this to another thread. sorry.

By ?classical? I mean by using a swivel knife, hammer and punches, one quiver at once, the hard way :))Eleazar wrote:

For my quivers I casted some buckles and other parts .
Perhaps we can trade.

Is the quiver meant to be a left handed one? The pattern is 17th century not twelfth. The finish is very well done and surface design is well integrated into the shape of the quiver.
Hi Jack Farrell,
"Would be interesting to see more which are not of a royal person. Ginny posted some of these once from a Swedish collection."
I agree! For know I finished on non royal person's quivers. Wait a few day... :-)

Bede,
you are right. It is for left handed. Actually in Czech republic many right handed archers use left-handed quiver on right side. The quiver lay on bottom. The arrows aim in front of archer and to right side.
Maybe for this reason we have system of attach like we have.
You wrote "The pattern is 17th century not twelfth" Are you sure please?
In Hofburk museum is info tab with date year 1550. So for now I am confused.

Hi E
I am interested in KT005, but can you make important changes on the back of the quiver and also with the two conchos? Your quivers look great but the straps are not correct yet. I visited quite some museums and I have good comparisons.
See my two links or search for Reto. Bede also posted some goods pics in Atarn. In case you need better/more photos I could provide them.

A long time ago I also posted some pics of old Chinese quivers, just in case.
So, do you feel comfortble to make those important changes and about delivery time and price?

Reto
PS; I do have two Conchos, you do not need to organize them

In gallery on my website there is picture of back of one of my
quivers, you can use it for ideas . Reason for braiding is to prevent
strap from wrinkling on the bend.
For leather dyes and other products feel free to ask , there's always few tricks
I can pass.

That is a really nice quiver. Well done.
Here are some comments on the quiver that might be useful.
Keep up the good work.
- 1. Buckles were a decorative item. Straps would be arranged so the buckles faced out.
2. The rear supporting strap is never visible and was not decorated and in the few surviving examples appears to be tied off, not buckled.
3. The pocket on the outside face should not bulge too much or the arrows will fall out if you are on a galloping horse. The top of the pocket was flat against the face of the quiver. The stitching in the centre was to reduce arrow movement even further.
4. The beautiful decoration you made on the upper part of the outside face would be repeated on the pocket. In most quivers I have seen in pictures and in art, if only one surface is decorated it is the pocket rather than the upper part of the outside face because arrows would cover the latter when they were placed in the pocket.
Keep up the good work.
Hellou Bede,
thank you. I will just do IT!

Eleazar,
People on this forum are genuinely interested in the subjects we discuss. I think everyone takes the view that helping each other is good for the study of archery.
I am glad that you are finding useful information here.
