using sinew from broken horn bow
Hello.
I make some horn bow.
I do not have them all makes a success.
I made 3 horn bows and 2 broke.
I tried to make a hor bow looking like Kassa? Greyhound and he broke during the tillering.
Here are my website : http://daniel-aquarelles.pagesperso-ora ... omposites/
Here a discussion on Webarcherie Forum about me trying to make a Magyar Greyhound horn bow http://www.webarcherie.com/index.php/to ... no-mongol/
I keep all my borken bows. It's easy to save the horn by sandering.
I now I'm asking me a question. Is it possible to re use sinew on horn bow broken limbs ?
I put pieces of sinew parts limbs on water in a closed glass jar shielde from the light by black colored paper at 20 ?C.
4 days later, the water is gently yellow and the piece of sinew became more thick.
I change water and 2 days more, I can see the fibers of sinew just like they were , when 2 years ago I make backing.
Here is my discussion :

What do you think ?
Have you already tried ?
Thanks.

Ysterday I get out the sinew.
I wash then several time with rain water ( no CaCo3 ).
In water I can see sinews fibers just like they were some years ago.
I let them drying.
Some photo are on my discussion on Webarcherie.
Nobody tried such a thing ?

Hi ketene!
Has been some discussion here earlier. If you read the third link you can see the opinions differ.

Hi lurz.
As I've writed, i've some pieces of horn bow ( I've made ).
The first time I've read about horn bow, I find the term " polym?rization ".
Obviously for me ( I worked in macromolecular chemistry ) there is polym?risation wyth monomere, catalys, temperature........but in backing a bow with sinews........
When we make backing, we are working ten minutes at 45 ?C and then the temp?rature degrease gently 2 hours and then stay at the room temperature for many logs months.
Why work we at 40 ?C? Because at this temperature the glue is liquid.
Why must we put fibers of sinews before gluing in water at 30-40 ?C 5 minutes ? I think it's for moisten the surface of the fibers of sinews. It's a kind of ensimage, in order to allow a good contact between fibers and glue.
Fibers are long macromoleculars chains of collagen. By heating fibers of collagen we can make glue. A kind of degradation, so macromolecular chain of collagen glue are shorter.
In such a nexperiment, there is no polymerisation. Il's just a gluing.
But the chains when the backing is drying ( some months ) are approaching together ( water is a solvent and a plastisizer ). Then the hydrogen bonding increases.
For me it's just hydrogen bonding , a kind of crystallization.
That's why I asked me a question " what became sinews fibers "
That's why I tried to understand.
I Obtain fibers. It's seemed to me that nothing have changed, the fibers looks like they was some years ago.
But I can't make physical properties tests.
it is my humble opinion that I think I've understand about " what happens to the sinews fibers during theses longs months of drying ".
Ecxuse me for my bad english.

It is totally reusable. There is no evidence that a backing polymerises into a single blended substance as people seem to speculate.
The glue may polymerise itself but not "with" the sinew.

Yes I've re used a few sinews on my third horn bow (the one with horn in two pieces by limbs ).
If I've time i'll try a horn bow with 2 pieces of horn by limb and with all re used sinews.
I've always project to do a Magyar horn bow. I've enough re used sinew but my problem is to find horn.

Yes It's with them that I provide myself.
Delivery is very hot but they give the other pieces and with I can make 20 cm pieces for making hornbow.
