B50 string with original thickness

Like to try the original string thicknesses with Dacron B50.

We have 70-100# hornbows and like to make a 4 mm string with near 5mm at the wrapped parts.

Usually we make 18-22 ply for this bows, but now like to make strings from B50 and from natural materials like the original strings was.

A 4mm B50 string is about 40 ply and have about 1400# brake strenght.

Have anyone expiriance wit a string like this on horbow?
I' m affraid a bit from the B50 string could be too rigid, simillar like a FF string and schould brake the bow. This is an experiment but don' t want to loose bows from this string.
Any opinion would be appreciate!

From my experience Dacron strings stretch no matter how thick they are.
I think the string won't be too rigid.
It will probably have very high mass though, have you thought about separate eyes that could contain more strands than the main body of the string? Or laying extra starnds only in the loop area under the eye serving (wrapped parts), not in the main body of the string, if that's an 'endless loop' string?
I think that you should be safe with an extra thick Dacron string...

Also, brakeges when using a fast-flight string, according to my experience and knowledge, are always casued by nock (bow nock) fractures.
I know that wooden bows take low-stretch strings very well, if the bow nock can take the stress.
Usually synthetic low-stretch strings are very thin in the loops...

It would be interesting to try a fast-flight string that has the same thickness in the eyes as an original natural string, maybe this could prevent a breakage on, especially a heavy, hornbow?

As Ashbow says, your Dacron string should be fine with the bows. B50 is a very stretchy material.

To comment on the FF type strings with hornbows. From what I have tried so far, it seems one needs to be careful with short bows (such as Turkish), which have very high string tension at brace. This means that during the last milimeters of travel back to brace, the forces on the nocks of the bow are enormous and the bow nocks can crack, regardless of the padding on the loops or nock reenforcements. I have also seen a greater potential for damage in case of strings which have longer loops. Its seems the loops allow for the string to jump within the nocks, causing more damage.

With longer bows at lower string tension at brace, the FF material can be tried. I have used FF for the Zargalant replica (~80-90lb) with small loops - no problem. A bowyer in the UK used FF (well twisted here for more stretch) on a 130lb Crim-Tatar bow.

Ah - thats very interesting. I wonder if I could get away with FF on my 'experimental' hornbow. It is already very fast and has shot 340 -360 yds with a 16 strand B50 string.

We like to reconstruct the cast with the " like the original " strings.
Use arrow reconstructions too.
I wouldn't like to use FF, think D75 is better but not in this case.
Our projets are archeological experiments and we try to learn and proowe things with this. If the dacron practice string is thick like a natural, we could use the same arrows for both.

So there is nothing to worrie about if use a so thick B50 string. Thats a good news.

Interesting thread, I would love to hear your results.

In the TBB # 4, the very last chapter has some fascinating info on strings, and bows breaking, overral Tim Baker credits mass weight for most breakages, strings, limbs etc. I have been looking twice and thrice at my various projects based on this chapter.

On one older bow being reflexed, and two new staves the outer limbs are going to be narrowed and lightened, while the early and midlimbs are staying wide. I will most likely be using FF for stringing all 3. As light as I can get. Hopefully it will add a few fps and a bit longer cast. The older bow is black locust, one of my older bows, it was at 62 lbs at 28" draw. This is another learning curve and I am going to be paying much closer attention to all of my string weights.


Especially on the little ash core for the new hornbow.
