I will hopefully be starting and finishing a suit of Samurai armor pretty soon, abd afterwards, I want to try my hand at making bows. can anyone direct me to a person that makes/sells good bow staves? also, can anyone give me advice on shaping the stave to make it flat? Because most staves I have found still have the bark on what would be the back of the finished product.

Hi combatarcher,

why do not you try bamboo? The Japanese warriers used to shoot with bamboo bows (& Yumis) rather then with horn bows. Have a word with Steve ( http://www.bowsforpros.com/ ) He can provide you with excellent bamboo staves, bamboo cores (the ones Japp K. uses) and other materials.

Thanks for the link to the site. Bamboo seems to be a good material to work with, from my experience with woods (which is not much) bamboo seems to be lighter and more flexible than wood (and not to mention stronger). I now could make a somewhat smaller version of a yumi (about six feet long) and use it for my reenactment group. Did the Japanese use thumbrings?

The Japanese used a glove called a yugake with a reinforced thumb instead of a thumb ring. If you glued a piece of smooth leather to the thumb of a glove, it would work for combat archery. You need that because the surface of an ordinary glove is too soft and would slow down the bowstring.
